Why?

Two posts in a day...Excuse moi but I can't "not post" this one today!

I checked out Raaga today and there was a movie called Ponniyin Selvan, the immediate thing that came to my mind was the rich tamil literature by Kalki and Manirathnam's stalled project. I thought maybe he is going to make the movie, then I checked out the songs to note that it is just yet another 'love' Tamil movie...

I was quite surprised that this title did not trigger any major controversy (or it did and I did not know of).... I remember all of last three Kamal's movie had controversy because of title, there were a group from a caste protesting for Chandiyar Virumandi; doctors protesting for "Vasool" Raja (proving an old tamil adage Kutram ulle nenju kurukum) and Ramdoss protesting for Mumbai Express (for no particular reason). So going by that trend and even otherwise they have all "Legitimate" reason to protest for using one of the rich text in Tamil literature to produce a yet-another-kollywood-classic with no relevance to the literature....

Why is that people dont protest when it comes to Tamil literature?
(if they had a major protest let me know I will admit my ignorance and remove this post...)

Maybe people will protest if they produce a Matinee-scene-movie with 'Silapathigaaram' as a title? (maybe not I dont think anybody cares) !

*This post is my way of protesting against Kollywood for besmirching Kalki's works*

When the name is associated with something else, it is better to leave it alone. In case if one does feel like using, then it should try to match the beauty and grandeur of the original, or atleast to match its grandeur in whatever one offers. Imagine a movie - a triangle love story that is not well-made, with bad music, worse lyrics- by name "kuraLOviyam"!! I am sure it will create dirty waves..

This is a classic example of a tactic followed by many to acheive fame, just by rebelling or opposing some great system or personality. If someone protest against a title of a Kamal movie or against Rajini movies, it is in all the papers, but not of some new comer's movies.

Basically they follow the simple funda, "No publicity is bad publicity"

About Kalki's work names used in tamil movies, couple of years back there was a movie titled "Paarthiban Kanavu", which isn't anyway related to Kalki's work.

For guys/gals who are curious and interested to read Kalki's works like "Ponniyin Selvan", "Thiyaga Bhoommi", but not good in reading tamil. There is good news, a publication in India is transliterating many regional novels and writings in English. Kalki's "Ponniyin Selvan" is already out in the stands. I think the publication names is "Katha". Check out.

Ponniyin Selvan in English was released in six volumes (and also Parthiban Kanavu) by Macmillan India, Chennai atleast three years back. The books have nice sketches and the translation is very lucid. Few friends of mine who can't read tamil have read them, and have liked Kalki's characterizations and his vivid description of events.

Pal,
Thanks for pointing out parthiban kanavu

Shencottah,
Apparently my friend suggested the same book which you mentioned to his American friend and he just loved the way it has been written....
I think the translation has done justice to the original work...
